Did we miss something on diversity?

Research shows a connection between kids' healthy self-esteem and positive portrayals in media. That's why we've added a new "Diverse Representations" section to our reviews that will be rolling out on an ongoing basis. You can help us help kids by suggesting a diversity update.

Melissa by Alex Gino

This book is an absolute masterpiece, in my eyes. Alex Gino managed to take a book about an LGBTQ+ topic and make it good, I really don't know how else to explain it? A lot of television misrepresents or misleads people about the LGBT community, and I suppose it's nice to finally have a book that actually represents some people in that community correctly. (And, it is VERY nice to be able to have an adult discussion in the review section about LGBT topics.)

Empathic

I love this book. As a person who talks to kids on the regular-- at least 10 a day or more... I promise Elementary kids think and talk in the ways represented in the book. I love that this book exists for the audience that it is designed for. I don't see it as an Elementary kid book, however, certain kids would definitely benefit from reading it in 4th or 5th. Kids going through this stuff need access to literature they can identify with. Middle schoolers, High School, college kids need access to books like this again so there is literature they can either identify with or read with an understanding heart. Kids like Melissa exist, we can't brush the topic under the rug. We need books like this for the purpose of empathy. So friends can care more deeply for friends. Family can care for family...I've appreciated this book so much, thank you, Alex Gino.
